Help support original music.

I recently received an e-mail by a Old Bo Fan from
stating that Bo Bice needs our help.

The problem:

Clive Davis and the execs at RCA records have a preference towards Bo performing and recording other people’s songs. As many of you know, Bo, like Taylor, is a talented songwriter on top of being a musician, and he, as well as his fans, would like to have more of his own, original music on his next CD.

A way to help:
Over the weekend Bo asked his fans in chat at to create and sign an online petition requesting that his next CD contain more Bo Bice originals.

The petition says:

To: Mr. Clive Davis of RCA records
Bo Bice’s first CD was made up of songs almost exclusively written by
other artists and songwriters. When the CD was released, many of Bo’s fans
found they preferred his original songs, and would like RCA to support his
aspiration to become an original recording artist.

We, the undersigned, want Bo Bice’s original music to make up the majority
of songs on his next CD.

The Undersigned

Bo saw the petition and came back into chat today with a statement of approval, saying simply: “That Rocks”.

I am usually not a fan of online petitions, but I will be signing this one and I encourage others to do the same.

You might be wondering if and/or how this relates to Taylor Hicks.

As Old Bo Fan put it in the e-mail he sent:

“The issue of what happens to unique artists like Bo in RCA’s hands is worrisome to those of us who are now wondering exactly how Taylor is going to be dealt with on his first CD. I am hopeful that all have learned from the experience of Bo’s first CD, and we won’t see a repeat of something like that with Taylor.”

Help original artists now, and you are also helping to pave way for other original artists in the future.

Please consider taking a moment to sign the petition linked below.

Done. Bo is a supremely talented singer and songwriter, and deserves to have his next CD be his own songs. Valley of Angels is by far the best song on his first AI produced CD.

  2. Jan says:

Cali50:Bo is very close in age to Taylor and he’s a seasoned performer.

I am listening to Valley of Angels for the 2nd time and I love it. Why don’t they release that song? I hightly recommend Napster for checking out music before you buy. You can listen to the entire CD a few times. By then, you should know if you want to buy it.

  3. Reba in the Prairie says:

I loved Valley of Angels as soon as I heard it, and it was the only song I bought on iTunes from his “Real Thing” CD. Love Bo! (Taylor first though!) and really hope he gets to do his own thing. I was petition signer #608.

  4. cindy griffith says:

count me in to support bo on anything

  5. Cali50 says:

I have faith that Taylor’s deal will allow for his originals and collaborations that he’s approved. I think his age, experience, and maturity may be allowing him to be treated differently. I think he may have a bit of a stubborn streak also!

  6. Quinn says:

Signed…Thank you Ash for letting us know.

  7. Jan says:

Lela: I will check out Valley of Angels and start sending some support Bo’s way. We need to help foster original talent like Bo Bice. He blew me away on AI with Whipping Post, Vehicle, and whatever song he did acapella. I need to find it. I’ll check out his fansite.

  8. Orca says:

Heading over to sign the petition now….

  9. mojavedesertgirl says:

Signed – of course! But this conversation begs the question – just how many albums will Taylor have to do under negotiation with Clive Davis? The way folk have been talking (before) it was only the first one – but now it sounds like the concern over control stretches beyond the first. Taylor is such a lovely songwriter, seems a shame (and stooopid from a business point of view) to keep his original work in a box…if anyone from the company pays attention to the message boards, I would have thunk by now they’ve gotten the message loud and clear that we want, as someone more clever than I said, Original Recipe Taylor.

  10. OldBoFan says:

Hi, Thackeray. Bo did “Changing for the Better,” one of his originals, on The Today Show. So there is one example of an Idol doing an original long before the CD had come out.
I still, however, have hope that Taylor will be able to get a first CD that is more Taylor. I hope that when Bo’s mom and Taylor’s dad were backstage at CityStages, some strategies may have been discussed. Taylor seems to have a strategy by which to approach this whole issue. I loved that he did “The Deal” at SoF and “HOAD” on GMA. He seems to be trying out different originals on audiences, and each time he points out it is an original and that hopefully we’ll get more. Bo did not push openly and publicly for originals until relatively recently (possibly there were some personal constraints that Taylor does not have).
Thanks again to everyone here for supporting Bo’s petition, and indirectly, all artists everywhere.

  11. Thackeray says:

I signed this and included this comment:

“I did not buy Bo’s first album because there was so little original music on it. I look forward to buying a true Bo Bice album, if he is allowed to make one.”

I’m glad to do this, but wonder if the tide is already turning for Taylor, given that he’s performing original music in some of his appearances this summer. Doing “the Deal” at SoF was one thing, but HoaD at GMA was especially encouraging in that the Idol band backed hiim – that means he was given time and they were paid to work it out. Is there precident for that in year’s past, or is this something new – a touring Idol doing original music in appearances, supported financially by Idol?

  12. Frankie says:

Thank you for this opportunity Ash. Bo was my favorite last year and my favorite song on his album is Valley of Angels which he wrote. I love his style of music and want to see him be able to express himself through his original music.

I hope this taught Clive a lesson, and he listens to Taylor this year.

  13. Dragon of Soul says:

Signed, but I think it pretty pathetic that it has come to this. Shouldn’t the artist have a say in what music he preforms. I also wonder, it seems like Elliot, Chris and even Kelly are claiming to be writing there own music-whats up with Bo? It makes me wonder how much freedom Taylor will really have. I hope he doesn’t have to do what Billy Joel was forced to do, and disappear from view till his horrendous contract runs out.

  14. Bama Angelfish says:

Happy to do this. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

  15. SoulForever says:

Signed and very glad to add my support.

  16. bjewel says:

Yes, I will sign the petition. I would like to see Soul Patrol and other fan bases unite to support struggling musicians.
Please keep us informed, anyone, of more opportunities to assist!

  17. MollyK says:

Thanks, Ash. It makes me sick what Clive Davis has done to Bo.

  18. lela says:

Valley of Angels, Bo’s original (only had a little musical bridge done with the magness guy) is the one they should have released as a single. It has been EVERYONES fav off the album. Let BO GO !!!!!

  19. EJ says:

Done, with an impassioned comment as well.

  20. double d says:

So, Chris has said his album will be totally his original music…if true, why can’t Bo’s be?

    Of course, signed.

  21. Jan says:

Done. I was a big fan of Bo and was very surprised and disappointed when he didn’t win AI. I know now that it’s because you have to have a crazy group of fans that will do anything to make sure you win. I say that I was a big fan of Bo because I am not currently a fan. I don’t like his first CD and didn’t buy it. I really hoped and believed that the second CD would be his own. I have watched American Idol from season 2 to the current season here is the list of the CDs that own from AI contestants:
Measure of a Man by Clay Aiken. I bought it for $5 at a used CD store and listened to it twice.

DIMYP CD single – 10 copies that I’ve been giving out to friends.
DIMYP vinyl single – 10 copies that I’ve been giving out to friends.

I’m keeping several of the vinyl singles as collector’s items forever.

I will support Taylor because of all the great music I’ve heard prior to the show through one crappy CD and then I’ll wait until he puts out something worth buying. I’d pay to see either Bo or Taylor live anytime.

  22. TJ says:

I have already signed this. Thanks for supporting Bo and I hope Taylor gets to record what he wants to.

  23. CloudNine says:

Signed, sealed & delivered . . . and forwarded to friends to sign too. My dearest and oldest friend even named her kitty kat Bo.

  24. Sunshine says:

    Absolutely signed.

  25. Shandykat says:

    Let’s hope it helps.

  26. OSB says:

Signed with pleasure. Many of the past & present idol contestants are songwriters, yet few have been able to convince Clive to let them use their own material, especially on their debut CDs. I would guess part of the reason for this, is that they want the CD out quickly, so, they have their stable of writers submit songs & advertise for other songwriter submissions as soon as the AI Top 2 are known. Basically, these kids are handed pre-selected songs, knowing they have the AI record buyers locked up. It makes some sense from their point of view, for the first CD. But, to hear some are still having a hard time getting their own songs onto their sophomore CDs, is sad. Granted, not every one of their songs is likely hit material, but, they should at least get the same chance as any other submitted song.

  27. calimari says:

Will do. I haven’t listened to a single thing of Bo’s outside of the actual show last year, but I really liked him on the show – the acapella piece he did was outstanding. I can imagine that he “comes alive” more when singing his own songs, rather than covers, just like Taylor does. He has a lot of talent & deserves better than what Clive is offering.

  28. Sylvia says:

Signed. Hope it helps. Bo is avery talented guy and I hope that he gets the chance to show more of what is the real Bo. He and we the fans deserve that.

  29. Kristin says:

Prior to Taylor winning me over this year, Bo Bice was my favorite idol hands down. I was devastated when he lost last year. But I happily bought his cd when it was released only to be devastated by how mediocre it was. I signed the petition because I believe that Clive Davis’ is out of touch with current music and musicians. I signed the petition because Bo deserves every chance he can get.

  30. pc325 says:

Thanks Ash. Happy to help out Bo!

  31. mariah says:

I love Bo and really feel for him. It hurts that he has a voice and a vision and is being blocked from following it. I’ll help all I can.

  32. Playin'Possum says:

Signed my name…and forwarded the information to many of my friends. Thanks Ash!

  33. OldBoFan says:

Thanks, Ash, and also to Taylor fans for your support for Bo, the artist. It is an amazing phenomenon to see support for one artist from the fan sites of other artists. Maybe this is a small rolling stone that can lead to an avalanche of demand for artistic freedom in today’s world of the Music Machine and the Wal-Martization of music.
    Thanks again.

  34. IbelieveinTHesong says:

    Hi, Ash —

I am de-lurking again to say TY for the link to Bo’s petition. Along with my signature, I wrote this note to Clive:

“Please let Bo Bice’s voice be heard (if he wants to record his original songs, please allow an artist like him to create — it’s called artistic expression!!).”

And yes, Catwood, “artistic freedom”! Everybody say, “Yes”!

I hope that Taylor keeps standing up for what he believes. I think that he has already learned from Bo’s experience — & I’m crossing my fingers that it turns out OK for both of them.

B/c of GC & the Boogie site, I’ve started listening to different kinds of music. (I’ve always loved music — I just didn’t realize that there were so many original artists out there.) I still have a lot of reading & listening to catch up on!!

And I can hardly wait for Taylor’s upcoming CD so I can listen some more (I already have 2 copies of UTR & DIMYP/TITTS).

  35. bamakat says:

    Glad to help. Done!

  36. catwood720 says:

Thanks for letting us know, Ash. I love his Papillon (or however he spelled it). I remember the first time I heard it, I kept playing it over and over… wow, typing that I did that reminds me of a certain artist from THIS year (haha)

Went and signed and am happy to do it for Bo, he sure deserves the support. I hate to see him get a bad deal, he should be allowed to do his own music. Artistic freedom, hasn’t Clive ever heard of that??

  37. Scottsdale says:

    Thank you, Ash.

  38. AgingHippie says:

Have listened to Bo’s Real Thing album and think the best song on it is Valley of Angels. Gee, guess who’s name is first as songwriter ????? [Clif Magnes is #2]

Know Taylor seems to have dug his heels in regarding his album but this couldn’t hurt and Bo seems like such a nice guy it’s a pleasure to support him.

My first time too – will be glad to pass this on to friends who were Idol watchers last year.

  39. Cali50 says:

    Done! Thanks Ash!

  40. Crazymomelon says:

My first online petition and it’s for a worthy cause. Thanks for posting this, Ash.
